Birmingham Pals Dig In At Stratford Armouries
June 17th, 2009Members of the Birmingham Pals Living History Re-enactment Group will be marching into Stratford Armouries on June 20th and 21st for a special event timed to coincide with the start of Armed Forces week. The group was started in 2002 to commemorate one of the 'Pals' battalions set up in World War One by towns and cities across the UK to encourage young men from shared backgrounds and locations to join up together. Sadly, it meant that, on the slaughtering grounds of the Western Front, communities often lost the prime of their manhood in a single action.
The Birmingham Pals re-enactors have been busy digging both British and German trenches at Stratford Armouries in readiness for the forthcoming weekend's events and both will be finished to resemble the real thing as closely as possible. The re-enactors will not only be providing authentically attired and equipped troops but also living history encampments as well as mounting two shows per day- the first will depict a trench raid across 'No Man's Land' and the second will comprise a 'battle', incorporating blank firing and pyrotechnics. Along with the Birmingham Pals' event, other attractions at Stratford Armouries include a Playbarn for youngsters, the Lantaka licensed restaurant (see below), the Creaturama exhibition by former Blue Peter artist Anthony James and an outdoor play fort and, coming soon, a Pirate Ship!
The gates open each day at 10am and the admission to the event is free. The first activity each day will be a trench raid at circa 11am while the main battle scenario will take place at 3pm- the opposing encampments will be open to the public all day and the re-enactors will be happy to answer queries.
Also at Stratford Armouries. Lantaka Restaurant will be serving a special Father's Day Sunday Lunch on June 21st between 12noon and 3pm- bring Dad (or Grandad) and spoil him. In addition there will be a small display of WWII vehicles for D (Dad's!) Day!! Make a day of it at Stratford Armouries- there's something for everyone!
Visit the Creaturama Legends Exhibition at Stratford Armouries
May 10th, 2009Come and see 15 life size characters from ancient myths and legends. Meet the gods of ancient Egypt and Viking mythology, all created from recycled materials.
The work of artist, Anthony James, has appeared on BBCs 'Blue Peter' and ITVs drama 'Kingdom'.

Visitors to Stratford Armouries over the weekend will be able to walk through authentic encampments set up by the opposing government (Redcoat) and Jacobite (Rebel) forces and quiz re-enactors about the exhibits and life at the time. In addition, they will be able to witness a series of drill displays by the various represented regiments along with a demonstration of their skills by mounted troops. The climax of each day will see an all-out battle between the opposing forces.
Along with the 'Redcoats and Rebels' event, other attractions at Stratford Armouries include a Playbarn for youngsters, the Lantaka licensed restaurant, the Creaturama exhibition by former Blue Peter artist Anthony James, an outdoor play fort and barbecue food.
